Fall 2025:
"EX MACHINA"
“The future is there…looking back at us. Trying to make sense of the fiction we will have become.” –William Gibson. For our fall 2025 production, we are inspired by musings about the future, and all of the uncertainties wound in alternate visions of society. It is no coincidence that countless authors, choreographers, and artists have drawn inspiration from visions of dark futuristic landscapes, and we believe that modern dance is a particularly fitting lens through which we can portray these imaginings.

Our fall 2025 show, entitled “EX MACHINA” aims to delve into questions and fears about the future, incorporating prescient issues of automation, surveillance, technology, and interconnectedness.

Drawing from the Latin phrase and the ancient plot device “deus ex machina”—“god from the machine”—“EX MACHINA” reimagines the sudden and disruptive force that has captivated countless audiences for millennia. Building on this tradition, the piece layers in a posthuman interpretation of “machina,” where machines begin to dominate human emotions, movements, and thoughts. What does it mean to be human when artificial intelligence takes over our daily tasks? What does it mean to be in the world when nothing is surprising—and no one can be surprised? Through sharp, unexpected shifts in movement and rhythm, the dancers will embody the tension between human vulnerability and mechanical intervention. “EX MACHINA” invites the audience into a future that is not distant, but imminent—a future where the boundary between the human and the machine is intertwined.

In residence at the Loeb Experimental Theater from November 17 to November 23.
Directed by Katy Nairn '26 and Olivia Ma '26.
